Gavin and David, sorry, WordPress sent you fellows to "Spam". I do check in there at least once a day, I guess it's a good thing!

David, Haris X did manage to get that info to me and I have Brisbane posted now.

Gavin, I notice all the comments in the article are directed toward the assault on media people. Which is good, I suppose, but not a hint that the assaults on the rally participants were excessive and unacceptable. The silence on this is deafening, I agree with XicanoPower's take here:
http://xicanopwr.com/2007/05/chief-william-bratton-orders-elite-lapd-squad-to-stand-down/
Just another of the miserable consequences of 9/11 seems to me to be a widespread acceptance of massive repressive violence by the authorities. How and when do we break back through and reclaim even that limited social space for protest and resistance that existed in the US pre-9/11?

Heres what InfoShop found regarding the LA MayDay protest:

http://www.infoshop.org/inews/article.php?story=2007050623403836

I almost looks like an apology and an ernest effort to right the damage caused by officers who attacked the rally. Then again... I'm not holding my breath for any kind of sincerity from one of the most corrupt police forces in America.

Carol

That's an interesting point. I think it is probably impossible to avoid that condition in a world with so much global communication technology, with satellite TV and the internet and so forth. Two thoughts on how to deal with the disconnect that causes: (1) to stay active in whatever little ways in our own neighborhoods and communities. Do that in a way that connects with the information and ideas we get from the global communications and media. (2) This is another reason that it is important to create our own global media. If we're going to be swimming in that sea of global information, then at least by creating our own media, with blogs, IndyMedia etc at least we're connected back as participants in the process that surrounds us anyway, not just spectators.

It's almost impossible to get off of the global context, but when you watches with a distant gaze, it's transforming your life and your values, you perceive that don't works and never take the satisfaction...because is not you
